Review Part 3

This is the next update for my review. I have added in the text; however I still need to rearrange it so the text is wrapped around the red circle at the start. I may also have to had more to my review to fill up the space but I will wait until the text is in the right position to see this as I still want to leave some space for a 'star review.' As well as this I have created a box where my image will be placed when I have taken it.

Refilming

This week we have refilmed the scenes that we previously that I mentioned in a previous post that we couldn't use. This is shown above. We have improved the brightness and made sure that the camera was focused and clear so the audience can read the text. We made sure to change the time on the phone so it would match any of the shots that we will be using from filming the last time.

As well as this, we decided to film some more long shots of the character, instead of just having lots of close ups of the text messages. Here is one example below:

Review Part 2

Next, I have added the 'Credits and Synopsis' section to the review. This is featured in nearly every Sight & Sound review so it needed to be added. It included everyone involved including the cast and crew and well as a synopsis/plot of the film being reviewed. Though it is still not completed as I need to include the names of the Producer/Editor etc.

Next, I need to add in the review, which I have already started writing and make room for an image which will be added in when it has been taken. I already have an idea of what I want the image to be: the very last moment of the short film when the two characters walk off together.

As well as this, somewhere I want to add a star rating. Though this is not used in Sight & Sound magazine, I still want to include it in my review.

Review Part 1

This is the first draft of my review. I decided I wanted to use the style of Sight & Sound Magazine so that is what I've based my review around. I start off with making the outline. Here, I have focused on getting the right shape, positioning and fonts so it will fit in with the magazine.

Below is an image of a Sight & Sound review so you can see where I have got the ideas from:

Evidence of Filming

This is one of the shots that Jayme and I filmed last week when filming the Jennifer's (my) flashbacks scenes that are at the end of the short film. We are quite happy with most of the shots we got apart from the one shown above. Due to the concept of this part of the short; the relationship developing through text messages, it was hard to get a clear view of the text messages. We managed to make it work for most of the shots so far, however, in this shot the camera hasn't focused properly and therefore we cannot use this shot. We are planning to refilm this shot next week.

Storyboards

We are nearly ready to start filming to I am starting to draw up our storyboards. This will give us a idea of what we are going to film for each shot, however, this might change when we are filming as we may have different ideas.

Here is the first two sheets of storyboards:

Script Draft 4

This is the updated version of our script.

Tuesday 4 November 2014

Actors

For our short film we need four different actors for our four characters:
  • Male protagonist
  • His girlfriend
  • Waiter
  • Female protagonist
For the waiter we will ask the café we are filming in if we can use one of the waiters working that day - if no waiter is happy with doing this either me or Jayme will dress up as the waiter and take this part.

Now we are looking for two female actors and one male actors. Unfortunately, it is hard to find people who will act in our short film. I will post more once we have found our actors.

Script and Props Change

While making changes to our script, we were advised by our teacher to add in a section where James needs an item to make a gesture of disclaim against femininity after we mentioned that his kitchen clearly has a woman's touch. Instead of risking any health and safety issues with possible breakages, or destroying the location, we have decided to go with a note from his then ex-girlfriend.

The note will say something along the lines of "can't wait for tonight, love you" which after being read, James will crumple up and throws it across the room as a sign of anger and discontent. This will now be added to the props list.

Contacting Music Organisations

Due to all the songs we like and want to use for our short film being by one artist we only have to contact one Music Organisation to ask. The band whose music we are using is Boyce Avenue who are part of 3 Peace Records which is why we are contacting them. Unfortunately, we can't find an email to contact 3 Peace Record privately so we have had to message them on twitter asking for an email and then tweet them asking if we could possibly use any of their music.

Sound

For our short film, Jayme and I have decided to not include any speech; just music. We think this will be very affective and will make the audience concentrate on what is actually happening in the film.

Due to this we will need many songs throughout; so the song will change when the mood changes. In the first draft of our script we have guessed we will use around 7 different songs. So now we need to find them.

We think we will be looking for acoustic music as we believe this will fit in with the genre of the short film well.

I will post the music we are using when we find it.

Ancillary Poster Ideas

  • Jame's hands holding the £5 note will be the main feature.
  • Title could also be on the £5 note?
  • Or in a handwriting font similar to the writing on the £5 note.

Script Changes

After the second redraft of our script we handed it in to our teacher asking them for any suggestions to make it better. These are the improvements she made.

Script Draft 1

This is the first draft of our script so far. We really like the idea of creating a short film without speech, and from Jayme's questionnaire, so do our target audience. Because of this, at the minute our script only contains locations, stage directions and music fade in/outs. However, this may change in the future once more questionnaires have been created.

Emails From Restuarants

Since we emailed the restaurants we were interested in filming we haven't had any response apart from one which unfortunately was negative as they wouldn't allow us to film there.

Since we have had no other email responses we will now be ringing the restaurants, asking them if we can use there restaurant as a location. Hopefully this way it will be easier to get an answer then through email.

Questionnaire Results Part 1

These are the results to my first questionnaire. It was a general questionnaire about short films and this is letting me know the general target audience for short films as well as popular genres.

Emailing Restuarants

When trying to find locations that we could film in we narrowed it down to around 4 restaurants in Newcastle which I have posted about before. We have been emailing the restaurants in order to try and get permission to film there. Here is an example of one of the emails that Jayme sent; this one to Tyneside Bar & Cafe

General Short Film Questionnaire

I have created a questionnaire about short films in general, it is not specific to my short film. If you would like to take the questionnaire click here. I will post the results to this questionnaire soon, once enough people have taken it to get good results.

After I have posted my pitch, plot and finalised the details of my short film I will create enough questionnaire specific to my short film before production, allowing me to know what my audience would like.

Film Reviews

These are the film reviews that I analysed and compared in my last post. I decided to post them again as they didn't show up great in the emaze presentation I made.

Possible Locations

In our short film, the main location we need to find is a café/restaurant, maybe two. We have been researching online for possible choices and have taken suggesting from people. So far, these are the possible locations. We have emailed all these cafes and are waiting for a reply, however, we are also planning to visit them before we decide.
